Robert Frost It has been said many times that all men have a common bond, or a thread that joins them together. Robert Frosts poem The Tuft of Flowers explores the existence of such a bond, as experienced by the speaker. In the everyday circumstance of performing a common chore, the speaker discovers a sense of brotherhood with another laborer. Frost contrasts a sense of aloneness with a sense of understanding to convey his theme of unity between men. To understand the setting of the poem, one must first understand how grass was mowed in the time period in which the poem was written (1906). Grass was mostly mowed by hand using a scythe. The mowing was often done in the dew of the morning for better mowing. This left the grass wet, and it needed to be scattered for drying. The phrase turning the grass refered to the scattering of the grass for drying. In The Tuft of Flowers, the speaker has gone out to turn the grass. Whoever did the mowing is already gone, for there are no signs of his presence. The speaker is alone. Then, a butterfly catches the speakers attention, and leads his gaze to a tuft of flowers, which the mower chose to leave intact. The patch of beauty left by his fellow worker causes the speaker to feel that he is no longer alone. There is a sense of understanding between the speaker and the mower, because an appreciation of beauty unites them. Frost uses peaceful images to relate the feeling of his poem. The setting is in a grassy field with a brook running through it. The tranquil feeling is added to by a silent butterfly, who searches for a flower upon which to land. In keeping with the peaceful surroundings, Frost speaks of a long scythe whispering to the ground, and of hearing wakening birds around. The speaker also listens for a whetstone on the breeze to determine if there is anyone around, and finds a leaping tongue of bloom beside the reedy brook. The Tuft of Flowers does not contain a definite meter, but it does have a strict rhyme scheme of AA, BB. The poem is organized in couplets, each of which contains a single thought. This makes the poem more charming and gives it simplicity, which adds to the overall feeling of peace and tranquility. Robert Frost provides many interesting ideas in The Tuft of Flowers. Perhaps the most striking feature of Frosts poem is his use of a paradox to illustrate the purpose or central theme of the poem. Men work together, the speaker says, whether they work together or apart. The meaning is that we are never alone, even if there is no one physically present with us at the time. Many motifs are contained in the poem. We are one in spirit, as well as being united by our work. We all can appreciate beauty. Most of us share a respect for life, even if its only for flowers we might choose to spare. After reading The Tuft of Flowers, one is left with a few ideas to chew on. The combination of thought and imagery makes for worthwhile reading. So if youre just looking for something interesting to read in a spare few minutes of your time, or if you want something to make you think, you should take a look at this poem. Many high school students are eager to report their accomplishments to colleges when it comes time for college applications. For some achievements, this is easier done than others. There are places on the Common Application to report your academics recognitions and awards earned in extracurriculars. Not all achievements can be so easily reported, though. Reporting official test scores is a little more involved. Official score reports for tests like the SAT, the ACT, and even AP exams must be sent directly from the testing agency. In the case of the AP exams, this means that in order to have an official score report sent, you will need to request one from the College Board. In this post, we’ll outline the three ways in which you can have an official AP score report sent, and how to self-report your AP scores as well. The simplest and most efficient way of requesting a score report sent to your college of choice is by selecting this option on the AP answer sheet at the time of your AP exam. This is not only the easiest way to report scores, but also the cheapest way. When you take the test, you are given one free score report, but only if you request it on your answer sheet. Simply fill in the four-digit code for the school of your choice and your official score report will be sent to that college. Keep in mind that your score report is cumulative. This means that the college will receive not only the score for your most recent exam, but also your scores on any previous exams (unless you have deleted or withheld them, which we’ll discuss later). You should also know that you will have an opportunity to cancel your score report if you receive your score and decide you don’t want it sent, but you will have to pay for this service. You can also send score reports after the fact by logging into your College Board account. Simply visit the College Board login and follow the prompts to select score reports. Because of this, Henry doesn't effect Basil in a negative way, as he does Dorian. Dorian appears to hang on every word that Henry gives, whereas Basil practically ignores what Henry says. Lord Henry's influence in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray is that is gives a meaningful, ethical story a further contextual layer. What was the most important reason for punishing the killers of James Bulger? The James Bulger case was the trial of the two boys, John Venables and Robert Thompson who in Merseyside, Liverpool, on the 12th February 1993 abducted and Murdered a 2 year old boy named James Bulger. The two boys were 10 at the time, however, in court were charged and convicted as adults due to the wickedness of the crime and the detectives believing that the boys were simply innately evil, and couldn’t have possibly learnt such behaviour.The boys were originally given a sentence of 15 years however it was shortened to 8. But what was the most important reason for punishing the two killers? One of the reasons that the boys were punished was too to protect society. Personally I think that protection was an important reason to punish the boys, because they were clearly unstable, meaning that it was highly possible they could do a similar crime again.I think that not many people would disagree, and I think that parents of young children living in Merseyside would agree strongly, as they would feel their kids were highly unsafe knowing that there were people like them in their neighbourhood. Another possible reason for the punishment of the two boys was deterrence, or to put others off doing a similar crime by making an example of the boys. I generally think that deterrent is an important reason for punishment as it stops others from doing the crime.For example in Singapore you are fined for chewing gum, meaning there is a lot less gum on the streets, however in this case I think that deterrence should not have been one of the most important reasons for the punishment because it was an extremely unusual crime as most 10 year olds do not have the mind set to kill another child, therefor there would be almost nobody to put off from doing it in the first place, however if the court were trying to make the boys a deterrent; I don’t think they did a very good job, as the boys w ere only given 8 years (which I personally think was to little considering the nature of the crime ).I think some people may disagree with me and say that they should be made a deterrent as other kids might be influenced by their actions. Another possible aim for the punishment was to rehabilitate the boys and make them into contributing members of society through giving them one to one teaching ( paid for by tax payers ) despite it being better than most normal children’s education. Personally I think that they did not deserve a good education for committing such a horrific crime, many people agree with this as at the time people said â€Å"they were living a life of luxury†.I think some people might say that it was good to rehabilitate them so they could become normal members of society and get jobs. Which could be true as it has been proven that there are not enough genes in us to program behaviour. However I don’t think that the boys could have picked up tha t kind of behaviour, also the fact that they showed no remorse for what they had done after the trial, only strengthens my argument. One of the main aims of punishing the boys was retribution. The boys had to pay for what they had done.Personally I think that had they been given a longer sentence that would have been enough, however some people had more extreme views for example Ralph Bulger said he would hunt down the killers, and others admitted they would be willing to pay the price for revenge. However a lot of people would disagree especially the government, as they would not what people to take the law into their own hands. The final possible aim for the punishment was vindication, meaning the law must be upheld.I think this is important because they had to be punished because of their crime, if they had gone unpunished other people might think they could get away with it. I don’t think anybody would disagree with me. In conclusion I think that the most important reason for punishing John Venables and Robert Thompson was retribution, due to how horrific the crime was. Personally I think that they were pure evil, as they didn’t even try to help their own case by showing remorse for their actions.

Feminists Turn Miss America 1968 Into a Protest The Miss America Pageant that took place on September 7, 1968, was no ordinary pageant. Hundreds of feminist activists showed up on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to enact their â€Å"Miss America Protest.† They distributed publicity materials titled â€Å"No More Miss America!† Organizers The group behind the Miss America Protest was New York Radical Women. Prominent feminists who participated included Carol Hanisch, who originally had the idea to protest the pageant, as well as Robin Morgan, and Kathie Sarachild. What Was Wrong With Miss America? The women who came to the Miss America Protest had several complaints about the pageant: It judges women on impossible standards of beauty. The protesters called the standards â€Å"ludicrous.†The pageant objectifies women and thereby harms all women.The protesters disliked the hypocrisy of the pageant, specifically the double standard of the Madonna/whore fantasy, in which men irrationally demand that women be innocent and beautiful, while also satisfying the mens lust. The feminists had other political disagreements with the pageant as well: They considered the pageant racist, for never having had a black Miss America.The activists opposed the Vietnam War and felt the pageant supported it by sending the Miss America winner to Vietnam to entertain the troops.There was a blatant inequality in encouraging girls to grow up to become Miss America. The standard line in the United States to any boy was that he could grow up to be president. Why not women? Why was Miss America supposed to be their equivalent dream? Rampant Consumerism The women at the Miss America Protest also criticized the consumer aspect of the pageant and the sponsors who used the contestants to promote their products. At the protest, the feminists of New York Radical Women announced a boycott of the companies that sponsored the pageant.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"Cattle Auction† The Miss America Protest began in the afternoon on the boardwalk. There at least 150 women marched with signs of protest. Some of their slogans called the pageant a cattle auction, for parading women around to judge them on their looks, the way men would judge cattle to decide the animals’ worth. The protesters nominated a sheep for Miss America and even crowned a live sheep on the boardwalk. Paying Attention to Liberation At the end of the evening, when the winner was crowned, several of the protesters who had sneaked inside unfurled a banner from the balcony that read â€Å"Women’s Liberation.† Miss America was a highly anticipated and widely watched event in 1968, so much of the nation tuned in to the live broadcast. The protest received media attention, which in turn attracted more women to the Women’s Liberation movement. The protesters asked the media to send female reporters to cover their demonstration and demanded that if there were any arrests that they only be made by women police officers.   Bras on Fire? The Miss America Protest apparently gave birth to one of the greatest myths of the women’s rights movement: the myth of bra burning.   The protesters at the Miss America Pageant threw items of their oppression into a â€Å"freedom trash can.† Among these items of oppression were girdles, high-heeled shoes, some bras, copies of Playboy magazine, and hair curlers. The women never lit these items on fire; throwing them out was the symbolism of the day. It has been reported that the women attempted to get a permit to burn the items but were denied because of the danger fire would pose to the wooden Atlantic City Boardwalk. The intent to set them on fire may have been what sparked the rumor that bras actually were burned. There is no documented instance where 1960s feminists burned their bras, although the legend persists. No More Miss America? Feminists protested Miss America again in 1969, although the second protest was smaller and did not receive much attention. The Womens Liberation Movement continued to grow and develop, with more protests occurring and more feminist groups being formed over the next few years. The Miss America Pageant still exists; the pageant moved from Atlantic City to Las Vegas in 2006.
